What type of college should I aim for? 2 year or a more public 4 year?

I have a 2.5 gpa, & I believe I can improve it a little more by the end of this year (I'm a senior) I've had personal problems in the past, it really effected my grades. &my familiy is really strugling finacially, But now I'm involved with a lot at my school; football, Polynesian dance, marching band, &drumline. My junior SAT score was a 1450 to 1500 something I believe? But I had a few D's in cles my freshman year like biology, & geometry. I havn't really had anyone to talk to about life after college so any advice would help.
